ECON 26B: Writing in Economics PracticumInstructor: Kim Chase Prerequisites: ECON 82b. Course may be taken as a corequisite. Yields half-course credit. Course Description: Have you ever wondered what it is like to live the life of an economist? Curious about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges? This course is intended to help cure that curiosity, focusing on one of the most important pieces of working as an economist: writing. Traditional economists get their start delving into both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of economic research, beginning with in-depth coverage of the major economic indicators (i.e. GDP, employment, inflation, monetary policy, etc). However, quantitative analysis means nothing if you can’t turn that data into an engaging economic story.The purpose of this practicum is to enhance your ability to use writing in the practice of economics. To do this, you will address a single policy issue over the course of the semester; use writing to develop what you think; and then produce a 10-15 page policy brief that presents what you think to the primary consumers of economic policy research – economists and non-economists in government, industry, and the press. This is a writing-intensive practicum that fulfills the Writing Intensive foundational literacies requirement for Economics majors.<br><br><b>This Economics course has prerequisites and requires a consent code to enroll in Sage.
