ECON 2A-Section 2: A Suvey of EconomicsInstructor: Geoff Clarke Prerequisites: Intended for students who are not Economics majors or minors. May not be taken for credit by students who took ECON 10a in prior years. Concurrent enrollment in ECON 10a is not allowed. Course Description: Economics attempts to explain the actions of humans, firms, communities, and societies. Much of the work of explanation occurs through modeling: simplifying complex situations into a few important mechanisms. The beauty of economics is that, in one semester, I can teach you how to use a basic model to analyze complex situations. The caveat is that often these models lead to incorrect predictions.

This course introduces the economic methodology to you. It works with real-life examples. The goal is not only to get you to use modeling, but also to make you a more informed consumer and citizen.

We will also present one argument in favor of using the free market system to allocate goods. We present this argument to interrogate it. Whether you agree or disagree with the premise, it’s important to know the argument.
