SOC 113B: Sociology of Race and RacismInstructor: Sanchita Dasgupta Prerequisites: None Course Description: Provides an introduction to the study of race and racism and focuses on specific socio-historical issues surrounding racial inequality in the United States. A variety of media to examine topics such as the institutionalization of white privilege, the social construction of "otherness", racial formation processes, and racial segregation are used. This course focuses primarily on the United States though readings from other national contexts are occasionally included. Course materials are designed to show you how sociologists approach the study of race and racism across a variety of subareas. Success in this four-credit course is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of nine hours of study time per week in preparation for class (readings, online activities).
