    ECON 20A: Introduction to Macroeconomics

    Prerequisites: ECON 2a with a B+ or higher or ECON 10a. May not be taken for credit by students concurrently with or after they have taken ECON 82b.
    Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the study of macroeconomics, which is the study of the behavior of the economy as a whole. The course is designed to give students an understanding of the basic concepts and theories of macroeconomics, and to help them analyze and interpret macroeconomic data. Topics covered in the course include gross domestic product (GDP), inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, international trade, and exchange rates. The course also covers the history of macroeconomic thought, including the ideas of Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes, and Milton Friedman. Through lectures, readings, discussions, and assignments, students will learn to use macroeconomic models to analyze the effects of different policy choices on the economy, and to understand the challenges facing policymakers in today's global economy. They will also gain an understanding of the relationships between different macroeconomic variables and how they affect people's lives. </br></br>Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:</br></br>- Understand the basic concepts and theories of macroeconomics. </br>- Analyze and interpret macroeconomic data. </br>- Understand the history of macroeconomic thought and its relevance to modern policy debates. </br>- Evaluate the effects of different policy choices on the economy. </br>- Understand the relationships between macroeconomic variables and their impact on people's lives.</br></br>This course is recommended for students who are interested in economics, business, policy, or other related fields, and who want to develop a solid foundation in macroeconomics. No prior knowledge of economics is required, but students should have basic math skills and be comfortable with graphs and data analysis.
