ECON 27A: A Day in the Life of an Economist

    Instructor: Kim Chase
    Prerequisites: ECON 20a.
Course Description: Have you ever wondered what it is like to live the life of an economist? Curious about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges? This course is intended to help cure that curiosity, focusing on some of the most important pieces of working as an economist: writing and presenting economic materials. Traditional economists get their start delving into both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of economic research, beginning with in-depth coverage of the major economic indicators (i.e. GDP, employment, inflation, monetary policy, etc). However, quantitative analysis means nothing if you can’t turn that data into an engaging economic story. The purpose of this course is to enhance your ability to use writing and oral communication in the practice of economics. To do this, you will learn to understand and interpret economic data, convey a narrative about that data in written form, and then translate into an engaging presentation to the class.
