PSYC 52A - Section 2: Research Methods and Laboratory in PsychologyInstructor: Jane Theriault Prerequisites: PSYC 10a and 51a. Course Description: The goals of this course are to develop students' research skills, quantitative skills, and critical thinking skills related to the science of psychology. We will discuss the scientific research process, common methodologies used by psychologists, and the ethics of psychological research. The foundation of a good psychologist is his or her ability to assess scientific research and create interesting and methodologically strong research studies to investigate their field of interest. Students will work alone or in small groups on their own experimentally-designed research projects over the summer. </br> </br> Our textbook has quizzes that will be used to take the place of exams in our course. Each chapter has a 30ish question quiz. These quizzes are intended to be low stakes learning activities to ensure continuous engagement in the course. You will have several other small assignments, such as practicing different types of experimental design, responding to videos, reading research studies, or taking small steps toward your project. For your main focus in the course, you will design a research study, write an Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposal, collect and analyze data, and write an APA-style scientific paper based on your project.
