    WGS 5A: Women, Genders, and Sexualities

    Course Description: This introductory course explores how gender and sexuality are intricately linked to race, ethnicity, ability, class, age, religion, and other axes of power and difference. The class is divided into five units: 1) "Ways of Seeing" lays the foundation through key terms and theories on sex, gender, privilege and oppression, and intersectionality; 2) "Ways of Knowing” examines how gender is constructed and maintained through the lens of religion (the "Genesis of Gender"), science, and technology; 3) “Ways of Being” analyzes embodiment, beauty standards, expansive gender identities, and queer sexualities; 4) “Ways of Doing” investigates gendered institutions like marriage, family, and work; 5) “Ways of Moving” engages with critical feminist issues like gender-based violence, reproductive rights, environmental justice, incarceration, and migration.
