REL 151A: Buddha, His Life and Teachings

    Instructor: Yu Feng
    Prerequisites: None
Course Description: This course is an introduction to Buddhism, one of the major religions of the world. Founded by Siddhartha Gautama or the Buddha in 6th century BCE. Students will study not only the origin of Buddhism and its foundations such as the Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Right Paths, and Precepts formed in ancient India, but also learn its historical development, including Mahayana Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Contemporary "Humanity-Centered" Buddhism. In addition, there will be a special unit to focus on the visual symbols of Buddhism. Instead of using an introductory textbook, students are encouraged to read directly the English translation of some of the most important Buddhist sutras and treatises. By completing this course, you will have a deep and comprehensive knowledge of Buddhism that is a solid foundation for your further study of Buddhism as well as for doing research in comparative religions.
