SOC 1A: Order and Change in Society

    Instructor: Lauren Crosser
    Prerequisites: None
Course Description: This course introduces students to the basic concepts and methods of sociology. We explore sociology as a “social science” by focusing on the key methodological and conceptual tools sociologists use and by looking closely at books and articles written by sociologists. We address questions about how and why society is organized as it is, how our lives are shaped by broader social forces (that we often do not see), and how aspects of our lives and biographies, like race, class, gender, and sexualities structure our experiences. In addition to reading articles and book chapters, we will do weekly written responses, a photo essay, and a sociological research proposal.
