    PHIL 1A: Introduction to Philosophy

    Instructor: Peter Lupu
    Prerequisites: None
Course Description: A Message to potential Students: Philosophy is a way of life enlightened by the highest form of self-reflection about the most fundamental and ultimate question of human existence. Throughout this course we will practice this conception of philosophy in the best possible way we can: that is, by inviting you to explore with me some of the most exciting examples of fundamental philosophical questions. Our life journey inevitably takes us through the landscape of philosophical questions. It is up to each and every one of us to enrich ourselves by pondering the questions we encounter or remain oblivious to their enriching potential. The primary purpose of this course is to encourage students to listen to this call and thereby enrich yourself with its fruits. What you learn throughout this journey is yours for the rest of your life; no one and nothing can ever take it away from you.Among the ultimate philosophical questions we will explore in this course are queries about the following: (1) Is there a perfect God? (2) Who am I/We? What is the nature of our mind and its relation to our body/brain? Do we enjoy free will or are all our actions predetermined? What is knowledge? What is the nature of morality? What justifies political authority? I hope that these questions grab your intellectual appetite, and you join this journey. See you on the road! Peter Lupu
