FA 23B: Architectural Drawing and Digital Design I

    Instructor: Andy Manos
Prerequisites: Only Architectural Studies IIM students may take both FA 23b and FA 24a for credit
Course Description: This course introduces students to the basic techniques and concepts of architectural design and digital drawing. Students will learn tools and processes for creating compelling and impactful architectural designs and producing analytical drawings to represent the built environment. Students will discover new skills in seeing, conceptualizing, representing, and communicating architectural ideas. A series of four drawing and design exercises will allow students to progress quickly through the fundamentals of producing architectural representations, so that they can practice applying new tools and workflows to the conceptualization and communication of original architecture. In the first two exercises students will learn the fundamentals of analog and digital drawing as well as representation and translation between two-dimensional and three-dimensional formats and across different scales. We will begin by working backward from object to representation -- studying constructed objects and spaces and learning how to produce drawings that accurately and analytically describe the objects of study. Students will combine critical thinking with the process of drawing to analyze and communicate a spatial concept embedded in an object of study. In the following exercises, students will progress toward using drawing as a tool for generating and iterating meaningful and original designs and communicating spatial ideas through drawing. Using tools and processes introduced in the first projects, students will practice developing, iterating, and communicating their own design concept and will receive feedback from peers and young design professionals throughout the process. This course will give students a strong foundation in architectural drawing, with the opportunity to learn and work between analog and digital tools including hand drafting, sketching, model making, Rhino 7, and the Adobe Creative Suite, in efficient creative workflows. Students will emerge with a strong foundational knowledge of drawing techniques and conventions, manual and digital tools that are broadly used in conceptual design and design development in architecture and other design professions today. Students will also refine their ability to read, analyze and depict the built environment and use drawings as tools for critical thinking and analysis of spatial relationships and how they stage human experiences.
