SOC 18A: Observing the Social World: Doing Qualitative Sociology

    Instructor: Manning Zhang
Prerequisites: May not be taken for credit by students who took SOC 118a in prior years.
Course Description: Have you wondered how sociologists do research? Are you curious how sociologists use observation and interview data to tell a great story? Get ready to dive into the exciting world of qualitative studies! In this 5-week remote course, we will not only learn the principles and theories that drive qualitative inquiry, but will also familiarize ourselves with various approaches of qualitative data collection and analysis. More importantly, we will practice developing a qualitative research project throughout the course. You can choose any sociological topic of your interests, such as college dating culture, gender inequality, social media use, etc. The assignments of this course will be a combination of weekly reading (including journal articles and book chapters), writing (weekly short reflections, one short memo essay, one research proposal, and one research essay), and chances for bonus credits. By the end of the course, you will have a better understanding of how to design and conduct qualitative research, and be more prepared for your independent study.
